I started working in I.T in the early 1980's. At that time personal computers were rare. Typically they were machines like the MITS Altair 8800, and the very early Apple model 1 computer.

These were only available as kits, and not easily found.

So in 1980, the machine I worked on was the mainframe from IBM called the IBM 360 Model 20.

When I went to college and earned my first degree in Information Technology, I was working on mainframe machines like the IBM 360.... typing away on the famous (and clicky) IBM 3278 terminals coding programs in Cobol, CICS, and NATURAL.

By 1985 I was working on mainframes regularly, and I began networking the personal PCs from IBM that were called the IBM model 5150 and the IBM model AT.

By the late 1990's I made the decision to pursue networking and personal computers, rather than mainframes. The internet was beginning to become popular. A few of the largest companies had  websites, but companies like Google did not yet exist. Only Yahoo! The popular browser of the time was Netscape.

In 2002 I accepted a position as Chief Information Officer at a $600M firm in the Madison area and by 2010 I retired.

I thought that I just wanted to quit working, but you know what?  Soon I found that like so many things, that once you get what you want, you often find you want what you had.

So at first I tried consulting for large companies for about 7 years, and although the money was good, I quickly tired of flying around the country. Finally I decided that I would rather make less money, and spend more time with my family.
